Last Thursday, I sat in a crowded movie theatre with my two youngest siblings. They had been begging me for months to take them to see “The Dark Knight Rises”. The movie began, and we prepared ourselves for what was to be one of the greatest films I have ever seen. We had no idea the tragedy that was about to happen 500 miles away.
The next morning was shocking. I could not believe what I was hearing, my initial thoughts were along the lines of “what kind of twisted individual would do such an inhuman thing”, and then my next thought, “I brought my brother and sister to see this, what if that sort of thing had happened here instead?”
This sort of tragedy makes us question human nature, what dark part of humanity drives someone to commit such senseless violence against another human being. However, there just isn’t an answer. You can’t rationalize irrationality.
Dale Mettam, a man whose work I respect, has written a wonderful blog post about the tragedy, and about why we need batman. The world truly needs more heroes, because as last Thursday taught us, there are already an abundance of villains in this world.
